Among other things, the machine is capable of running climate and weather models with kilometer-level resolution, which will allow for more accurate forecasting of extreme events โ€“ from heat waves to floods.

The JUPITER supercomputer, the first in Europe to break the exascale barrier, has opened in Germany. The system is capable of performing more than one quintillion operations per second, according to the European Commission press service.

The supercomputer is located at the Jรผlich Research Center and runs entirely on renewable energy. It features advanced cooling and heat recovery systems and tops the Green500 global energy efficiency ranking.

The Jupiter complex occupies over 2,300 square meters and consists of approximately 50 container modules. It is currently the fourth-fastest supercomputer in the world.

Furthermore, JUPITER will support the upcoming European Artificial Intelligence Facility (JAIF), which will train large-scale language models for generative AI.

JUPITER, a joint EU-German project within EuroHPC, has received โ‚ฌ500 million in investment. It is part of a broader strategy to create a network of AI gigafactories that will provide industry with computing power for developing new models and technologies.
